I woke up after having the strangest dream. It left me feeling accomplished, confident that whatever I tackle I can get done. This is a good feeling to wake up to. Let me know what you think of it.
Hazy start, I'm in a classroom. I am sitting at one of those large round tables with chairs seated around it. There are only four students, and a teacher. I am there doing an economics/sociology crossover study. I've got a notebook with outlines in it and blank, lined pages for taking notes on. I am there to observe, and sometimes participate in order to study reactions. The four students, there are two boys and two girls, they are probably sophomores or juniors. One of the boys is on the football team, and bright too. The teacher is male, scruffy looking professor type sitting on a stool in front of a whiteboard/blackboard rolling display situated at the "head" of the table.
I am occasionally conferring with the teacher about stuff I can't remember...
Then there was a whacked geography, football toss lesson... that is kind of a discussion I am having with the football player and one of the girls, a friend of the boy I assume, and as we are tossing the football back and forth I am prompting him to tell me where (geographically) North Korea is - except the answer I prompt is nothing at all to do with strict geography... Because I say, "where is North Korea? It is below a country we are currently in conflict with (Afghanistan he says) and above that is... (China, he says). And the answers are correct in the dream. Weird.
Then, after having another conference with the teacher, the other girl approaches me and sits next to me and tries to do the ingratiating thing with me... telling me when she would be available to help me with things if I needed it, giving me her phone number - all the while trying to get a look in my notebook at what I had written down about her and the class, which I didn't give her a chance to see.
At this point I had general descriptions and notes about each student, noting traits and who associates with who for what reasons.
On another page, I had the words Loose Alliance Building in capital letters and underlined a few times for emphasis. I believe I was planning on associating alliance building between individuals with economic structures and how they relate/interact. I begin to think about this within the dream, associating the alliance building not only to community structure but also to REWARD STRUCTURE, basic economic UTILITY theories, etc... Why someone will do something, for some benefit, even if that benefit isn't clearly known, even to the individuals involved. There is no intrinsic good, it all boils down to benefits/rewards/utility, and this doesn't have to be directly related to monetary exchange or equivalents in order for it to exist. All of this is revolving through my sleeping brain and it appears quite fascinating, as dream-induced epiphanies usually feel. That was neat. It reminds me now of studies done with Bonobos (primates possibly more (or as) closely related to us than Chimpanzees, there was a recent one described the other day in either Wired or the NY Times as well as some comments I had made to the
economics forum.
Class returns to session, and I mention the dedication of the new auditorium to the musical director who was there when I was going to HS, and is still there... About how they want all his previous performing students (those of us who were in the "elite" singing groups and who participated in assorted musicals) to attend and also participate in a few things on-stage.
Right about then is when I woke up.
