I was looking around the internets to find more holiday film goodness to put on the Netflix lists. I found many that I had totall6y forgotten in addition to all the yearly traditionals that are aired on television.

One film in particular I had been wracking my brain to remember the name of... all I could remember was that it was somewhere in the Scandanavian countries and had some skates in it. In a stroke of luck I googled Holland+Skates+movie and ended up having the entire first page dedicated to the film and the book it was based upon. Go figure.

The film in question is Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates. Technically it may not qualify as a christmas film, I do not recall if it just occurs during the winter. However, I do remember feeling the holiday goodness & cheer while watching it, which may be the Disney Effect.

Anyone else remember this classic?

What are your favorite holiday films?

Two classics you've got there, very good movies. I'll probably put up a huge list of lists one of these days. There are probably enough movies to be able to watch one for each day of december. Kind of like one of those advent calendars, each door opened is a movie to view for the day, and a food item inspired by each film... Hrmmm. I'm liking this idea.

I've read a site that lists 100 holiday movies but it includes TV specials and webisodes, too. I like the movie advent calendar idea alot.

'Original Air Date 1962'

Wow! Thank you for finding this!!! I remember a tv program of this story, but I think my memory is later than '62. We only had one child then, and what I remember was one on, when we had three.

Anyway, it's one of those neat memories of Christmas past. So I want to try to see this one. Maybe it's the same. Maybe it's diff. Maybe I won't remember for sure. [probably the last...-grin-) But a 1962 make has to be kind of vintage-eeeeeeee. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

They do play this on cable pretty often during the holidays. I've seen it several times over recent years. Never watched it as a kid, back when it was new.

I definitely didn't see it on it's first airing... :D I was old enough to remember it so it would have to have been in the eighties at some point that they re-aired it. I'm hoping it is as good as I remember it being. Heh.

And may I add, I'm so happy to see happy-type entries here. No, I don't begrudge you the use of your LJ, for all types of entries. But... I admit to being happy... to see happy ones. -smile-

I'm happy about having a happy post too. Felt a little burned from LJ (the drama ya know) however I'm getting over that. Plus the holidays, I've always been able to have the warm happy thoughts around the holidays.

I too am very glad to see it. You've had some bumps in the road this year and it's good to see you relaxing around the holidays which can be a stressful time as well.

They made a movie out of that? I must have been lving under a rock. That was one of my favorite books as a kid, I haven't read it in ages.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it on cable, thanks for the heads up!

Yeah, they made a movie with complete unknowns from the area that it was supposed to have happened even. I've only seen it the once oh so long ago. Not taking any chances on it being aired when I can't catch it either, hence the Netflixing of it.
